Inspired by old Irish road signs
The design takes inspiration from the bold, functional appearance of older Irish road signs, with their strong lettering and instantly recognisable directional shapes.
I’ve taken that traditional visual style and given it a handmade interpretation, carving the design directly into slate rather than producing it as a printed reproduction.
The result combines the nostalgic appearance of an old road sign with the natural texture and character of hand-worked slate.
Repurposed slate
The signs are made using repurposed slate, giving existing material a new purpose.
Slate is a fantastic material for this type of work because every piece has its own character. The surface can contain natural texture, variations and small imperfections, which become part of the finished artwork.
I don’t aim to make every sign look machine-perfect. The small variations in carving, paint and slate are evidence that your piece has been individually made by hand.
